It doesn’t feel like a grammar activity. It feels like real detective work!” - Year 11 student.

Bio-Hazard Mystery: The Omega Strain is a carefully designed murder mystery activity for B2+ ESL learners that puts modal verbs of deduction at the center of every decision.

Students work in investigative teams to analyze staff profiles, forensic photographs, an intercepted phone call, and social media profiles eliminating suspects at each stage until they uncover a final two-culprit twist that nobody sees coming.

What makes this different:

Real language in context
— modal verbs are not practiced in isolation. Students use simple and perfect modals because the task genuinely requires it.
Watertight logic
— every clue has been carefully designed so that exactly the right suspects are eliminated at each phase. No ambiguity, no misleading information.
Built-in differentiation
— a modal verb reference bank and partial transcript scaffold support weaker students without making the activity easier for stronger ones.
Two formats included
— a digital version for whole-class use and a printed version with a checkpoint system where teams only advance when they get the task right.
Complete teacher support
— a full teacher guide includes phase-by-phase answer keys, checkpoint guidance, common errors to watch for, and a full audio transcript.
Four evidence types — written profiles, AI-generated forensic photographs, audio intercept, and fictional social media profiles keep engagement high across sessions.

What’s included:

  • 22-slide presentation (PDF and link to digital version ready to display)
  • Student investigation logs for all 4 phases
  • Phase 3 audio file (intercepted phone call)
  • Teacher guide with complete answer keys
  • Printable version of crime scenes
  • Printable version of social media profiles
  • Target level: B2+ Sessions: 2 × 50 minutes Group size: 3–4 students per team
