Edexcel International A Level Chemistry lesson on benzene reactions, covering electrophilic substitution, nitration, Friedel-Crafts and mechanisms. All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 13 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 5 – WCH15, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question.

Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time.
Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slide 3 – hydrogenation of benzene, including reagents, products, conditions, the mechanism and example equations
Slide 4 – (bonus content) this slide explains why benzene can be hydrogenated like an alkene, but not brominated
Slide 5 – an embedded YouTube short video showing the combustion of benzene and the smoky flame that is produced
Slide 6 – combustion equation for benzene in oxygen
Slides 7 – 11: this section covers bromination of benzene. The reagents, products, conditions, mechanism, electrophile and use of products is presented first. Halogen carrier catalyst is explained. The mechanism is outlined in small chunks with expert animations and explanations for each step, including the two-thirds of a circle in the intermediate species
Slides 12 – 13: this section covers nitration of benzene. The reagents, products, conditions, mechanism, electrophile and use of products is presented first. The mechanism is outlined in small chunks with expert animations and explanations for each step
Slides 14 – 17: this section covers sulfonation of benzene
Slide 18 – definition of Friedel-Crafts reaction
Slide 19 – 20: this section covers Friedel-Crafts Acylation. The reagents, products, conditions, mechanism, electrophile and use of products is presented first. Halogen carrier catalyst is explained. The mechanism is outlined in small chunks
Slides 21 – 22: As above, but for Friedel-Crafts Alkylation
Slides 23 – 30: exam questions with mark scheme answers included with this resource

Bundle

Edexcel International A level Chemistry - lessons with questions and answers | Topic 18 | Organic Chemistry - Arenes

This bundle is comprised of 3 PowerPoint lessons covering Topic 18 – ‘Organic Chemistry - Arenes’ for the Edexcel International A level Chemistry course, Unit 5 – WCH15, but it can be used for all UK exam boards which have an Organic Chemistry (Arenes) unit. The PowerPoints are as follows: 1. Benzene’s structure 2. Reactions of benzene 3. Phenol Each lesson is exactly that . . . a lesson. There is a starter slide, lesson objectives slide, introduction of new knowledge slides, worked examples and then opportunities for students to try independent practice through mini plenary tasks comprised of several questions of graded difficulties. Questions are interspersed through the lessons at regular intervals and always have answers that animate on to the screen when you click. THESE ARE NOT THE INFORMATION ONLY TYPE SLIDES THAT SOME PEOPLE SELL, which are useless for delivering a lesson. We are a team of teachers, and these lessons have been made by actual Chemistry teachers who currently teach in secondary schools in England. We know exactly what you need, trust us. Every lesson has exam questions included as word documents which were made using Exam wizard. The mark scheme is at the end of each exam question and the answers have been screen shotted and pasted into the PowerPoint at the end. All the slides in every lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. Please note: core practicals have not been included, as we are preparing a separate resource for all the core practicals. Watch this space! Please consider leaving a review! It really helps promote our store! Thank you! PS: we have thrown in a bonus resource free of charge! We hope your students enjoy the chemistry drill rap about benzene by MC Afrique, who is an affiliate of Lifeboat Teachers! The rap comes with the lyrics, comprehension-style questions and answers!
