The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the reasons why the RAF won the Battle of Britain and how Britain was able to resist a German invasion in 1940.

Following the fall of France, Hitler began preparations for Operation Sea Lion, the planned invasion of Britain. With the Luftwaffe having a numerical advantage in aircraft and many believing Britain was close to defeat, students investigate how the RAF managed to achieve a remarkable victory in the skies above Britain.

Through an enquiry-based lesson, students analyse a range of historical evidence, including video footage and a ‘top secret report’, to identify the key factors that helped the RAF gain an advantage over the Luftwaffe.

Students investigate the importance of pilot skill, aircraft production, radar technology, intelligence, fuel supplies and the determination of the British people.

Students also evaluate the effectiveness of the Government’s wartime propaganda campaign, considering how posters were used to reassure the public and maintain confidence during one of Britain’s darkest moments of the Second World War.

Throughout the lesson, students weigh up different factors and decide which was the most important reason for the RAF victory. They develop their ability to explain historical significance, evaluate evidence and construct supported historical judgements.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson using a lightbulb activity and revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress and demonstrate how their understanding has developed.

Fully planned and ready to teach, this lesson provides an excellent introduction to the Battle of Britain while developing key historical skills including source analysis, evaluation, significance and interpretation.
