In this lessons students explore they can write vividly about an idyllic place which they they may have visited on holiday. This would fit in well with a KS3 Autobiography scheme of work where students are encouraged to write about their own lives.

1. Pair talk - recall pleasant places visited.
2. Intro to writer Gerald Durrell who wrote My Family and Other Animals and the place in which it is set - Corfu, Greece
3. Students are given an extract from the book which described his childhood memories of the villa in which his family moved to - lots of lovely description of the garden
4. Students are asked to identify simile and personification and consider the effect using a colour code.

6. Written task - students to plan and write their own description of a beautiful place.
