This resource is designed to develop pupils’ understanding of finding missing side lengths in compound shapes, a crucial skill needed before calculating area and perimeter accurately.

Rather than focusing on full calculations straight away, this pack targets the key reasoning step pupils often struggle with: identifying and calculating unknown measurements within compound shapes.

The resource includes three documents, each containing three carefully structured worksheets, allowing for clear progression and differentiation:

Document 1 – With support:
Guided layouts and prompts to help pupils identify relationships between sides and calculate missing lengths.

Document 2 – With some support:
Reduced scaffolding to encourage independent reasoning while still providing structure.

Document 3 – With no support:
Full independence, requiring pupils to apply their understanding confidently and accurately.

Across the pack, pupils will:
Identify equal and corresponding sides
Calculate missing side lengths logically
Develop the reasoning needed for area and perimeter of compound shapes
