Can trees communicate, cooperate, or remember past events? This CEFR B2-C1 ESL lesson examines scientific research, critical thinking, and the language we use to understand the natural world. Designed for both ESL and general English classes, it explores the work of German forester Peter Wohlleben and current scientific research.

Students examine the difference between scientific writing and anthropomorphic language while developing academic vocabulary, critical reading, and objective writing skills. Throughout the lesson, learners evaluate claims, distinguish between evidence and interpretation, and rewrite emotionally charged passages into a more formal scientific style.

This lesson is ideal for teachers and tutors working with advanced CEFR B2-C1 learners in ESL, EFL, EAP, university pathway, adult English, secondary, and independent learning settings.

Students will:
