This four-page resource is designed for KS1 , providing opportunities to explore animals, sounds, letters, and words through phonics-based activities and writing practice. It supports differentiated learning and can be used independently or in group work, ideal for literacy corners, phonics sessions, and early writing development.
Sheet 1 – A–Z Animal Mini Cards
Children will enjoy tracing letters and colouring 26 mini cards, each featuring an upper- and lower-case letter with a corresponding animal (e.g. A for ape, B for bear, C for crab). These cards can be coloured, cut out, sorted, and pasted into Sheet 4, encouraging alphabetical awareness and sound-picture recognition.
Sheet 2 – Alphabet Tracing & Matching
This page includes outlined letters A–Z in both upper and lower case. Children can trace, colour, cut out, and place the letters in alphabetical order. They can also match them to the animal picture cards from Sheet 1 to reinforce sound and letter knowledge.
Sheet 3 – Animal Word Matching
Children trace 26 phonics-friendly animal words (e.g. flamingo, kangaroo, narwhal) and match each to the corresponding letter and animal card. This activity builds early reading and spelling skills while supporting sound-to-word connections.
Sheet 4 – Blank Animal Template Grid
A flexible template where children can paste cards, draw animals, or write their own words. This encourages creative writing and independent learning. The open-ended layout makes it ideal for reinforcing vocabulary and personalising learning.
How to Use:
• Print and laminate for long-term use in writing corners or literacy stations.
• Use whiteboard markers on laminated sheets for tracing and rewriting.
• Enlarge pages for class displays.
• Duplicate and cut for matching, memory, and sorting games.
• Link activities to science and geography by sorting animals by habitat: land, water, or sky.
This resource links key areas of the curriculum: phonics, alphabet knowledge, fine motor development, and animal recognition.
