What pupils will learn

  • Pupils know the Romans left Britain around AD 410 and the Anglo-Saxons settled the land from AD 450 onwards
  • Pupils can describe Anglo-Saxon village life and the seven kingdoms (the Heptarchy)
  • Pupils know the story of Sutton Hoo and what it tells us about Anglo-Saxon kings
  • Pupils know the Vikings raided Britain from AD 793, eventually settling much of the country (the Danelaw)
  • Pupils can explain how Alfred the Great resisted the Vikings, and how his grandson Athelstan became the first King of all England (AD 927)

What pupils will be able to do

  • Pupils can place key events on a long timeline from AD 410 to 1066
  • Pupils can analyse Anglo-Saxon and Viking artefacts (helmets, jewellery, manuscripts, runes) for what they tell us about life and beliefs
