This is an updated and improved version of my very popular lesson on Beatrice Garland’s ‘Kamikaze.’ It contains a large amount of historical context to help GCSE AQA English students get to grips with what this poem is saying. Genuine historical resources will help students understand imagery of propaganda and religion from WW2 era Japan, and I work from the assumption that most students have not covered this in history; teachers can discard or include slides as they desire. By the end of this lesson, students should have a fully annotated poem and a grasp on what this poem is saying.
