KS1 Alphabet I Spy is a quick back-to-school phonics game that builds teamwork, speaking and listening, and active looking.
Show a letter slide (each poster has up to 10 mixed, overlapping images), model as a class, then pupils work in pairs to spot items that start with the target sound, say the words, and, if ready, write a list; share back and check initial sounds.
There is a poster for each letter of the alphabet. Posters for Z and X contain some words with the letters within the words e.g. pizza and fox.
Differentiate by accepting verbal pointing or scribed lists, using word banks or adult support, and add challenge with a timer, spellings, or one or two “trick” items or red herrings.
Extend by having children create their own posters and quiz another pair, or the class.
