This lesson is part 4/5 of 5 lessons that cover the entire content of Learning Aim A (The last 2 lessons can be done in either order!).

Layout of the lesson
•Review of which parts of the scientific reports will be worked on in this lesson and the content expected in these area
•What purity is, how purity can be determined and the importance of purity in pharmacology
•Background on how chromatography in works in terms of stationary and mobile phases
•An overview of paper chromatography, TLC, ion exchange chromatography, gas chromatography and HPLC followed by a task where students identify the most appropriate chromatographic technique for each scenario
•What aspirin is and the aim of this investigation
•Students to make their own risk assessment
•Students make notes on the rationale behind their technique and set up of their chromatogram - this can later be written into their coursework
•How does TLC work in separating components in terms of bonding as well as
•Precautions on TLC results to ensure accurate result taking - this covers locating agents and fading results
•Method and animation on how to prepare and run TLC. Students will not have a table this time as they can be expected to make their own
• A guide on data analysis and key points for students to discuss in their results
•Evaluation guides to allow students to calculate and analyse the accuracy of their results compared to peers, pure aspirin Rf values and the literature Rf value
•Evaluation guides with prompts to support students in writing and in-depth evaluation. It is wise to encourage students to think about their own experiences during the practical for where issues may have arisen and how these could be resolved in the future
