Students struggling with nonfiction text comprehension? Are they having difficulty finding important details and referencing the text to find an answer?

These nonfiction reading comprehension task cards are designed to help 2nd-grade students boost their comprehension of informational text. Through repeated practice, students engage in referencing the text, rereading for important details, and referencing the text to find an answer to a multiple-choice question.

The cards are designed to support students with reading informational text while building background knowledge and scientific vocabulary in 2nd Grade NGSS-aligned topics.

The cards are organized into three NGSS-aligned science topics:

  • Matter
  • Plants & Habitats
  • Earth’s Systems

As students practice reading and building their comprehension of nonfiction text, they build their background knowledge on materials, habitats, fast and slow changes to Earth’s surface, states of matter, and more.

Each topic includes two levels of difficulty, making it easier for you to differentiate for the different needs in your class. The broad range of topics, as well as the different difficulty levels, allows these cards to be reused throughout the school year.

Additionally, many cards introduce and support scientific vocabulary, which allows for essential support for our ESL / ELL students, many of whom face difficulties in Science class due to limited vocabulary.

Includes:

  • 30 nonfiction task cards
  • 3 NGSS-aligned science topics (Matter, Plants & Habitats, Earth’s Systems)
  • 2 levels of difficulty (indicated on the cards with 1 or 2 stars in the top right)
