This Year 2 teaching resource consists of 30 PowerPoint slides , split into 4 sessions, covering -ed suffix sounds for reading and spelling.

Session 1 – ed suffix as /d/ sound
Session 2 – ed suffix as /t/ sound
Session 3 – ed suffix as /id/ sound
Session 4 – recap of ed suffix as /d/ /t/ /id/ sounds

First three sessions include:

  • Introduction to -ed suffix as means of changing verbs to the past tense
  • Introduction to -ed suffix sounds /d/ /t/ /id/ (animated slides)
  • Carpet activity 1: spell past tense verbs words using -ed suffix to make /d/ /t/ /id/ sound at the end (animated slides).
  • Carpet activity 2: identifying past tense verbs using -ed suffix to make /d/ /t/ /id/ sound (animated slides).

Final session is recap focus

  • Pupils spell past tense verbs ending in /d/ /t/ /id/ sounds using the -ed suffix (animated slides)
  • Pupils group past tense verbs based on which sound the -ed suffix is used for (/d/ /t/ /id/) (animated slides)
