This fully resourced explanation writing unit explores the fascinating topic of How Animals Get Their Energy. Students will discover how energy moves through food chains, learn the roles of producers and consumers, and understand how herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores obtain the energy they need to survive.

They will also investigate food chains, predators and prey, adaptations, and why different animals need different amounts of energy. Through engaging scientific content, students will develop their ability to write clear, organized explanation texts while deepening their understanding of living things and their habitats.

Following Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, each lesson builds progressively to support pupils in mastering key writing skills such as fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases, and conjunctions. The unit is ideal for writing across the curriculum, science and literacy integration, or as a standalone explanation text unit.

This pack includes:

  • 10 detailed lessons with clear learning objectives and teacher models
  • A two-page WAGOLL (model text) with annotated teacher notes
  • Over 110 editable teaching slides
  • 17 student worksheets aligned with each stage of the writing process
  • Sentence stems, writing scaffolds, and success criteria
  • Grammar focus: conjunctions, fronted adverbials, and expanded noun phrases
  • Audio version of the WAGOLL for accessibility and EAL learners
  • Dyslexia-friendly font and layout
  • Quizzes, retrieval tasks, and assessment tools included**

This unit supports the science topic Animals and Their Habitats and provides meaningful opportunities for students to strengthen both their scientific understanding and nonfiction writing skills. It is ideal for whole-class teaching, guided groups, intervention work, or independent writing tasks.
