Pancake Day / Shrove Tuesday lesson pack - suitable for KS2 or possibly younger students in KS3. In this lesson the students will investigate the religious significance of Shrove Tuesday, Lent, and the Bible story that inspires the tradition. We will retell the story of Jesus in the desert and reflect on the modern tradition of eating pancakes. The lesson includes a detailed PowerPoint presentation, a video clip with questions, a scaffolded main activity, and a plenary task. Who are EC Resources? This worksheet uses the topical theme of Pancake day to practice using il faut + the infinitive, it has activities including a gap-fill, recognition of words and sentence structure, translation, grammar guidance and find the French. There are extra tasks to keep those students who work through it at a faster pace, or you may wish to use the extra tasks for differentiation. I have used this with year 8 students for cover work and also for when I am assessing spoken French as students can work independently through the tasks with minimum guidance. I have included the answer sheet for self/peer checking.

Pancake Day / Shrove Tuesday resource pack - suitable for upper KS2 or lower KS3. The pack includes a PowerPoint full of information as well as a quiz, a differentiated clip task, a creative activity (the frying pan of knowledge) and measurable LOs. It is designed to last an hour (perhaps would last over) and everything is editable, well-differentiated and all information included, so you can just pick it up and go. Prior to the assembly, get each tutor group to nominate a 'flipper' and a 'counter'. You will need to buy a pack of ready made pancakes & borrow a frying pan from Food teacher for each tutor group. I spoke about giving up biscuits é signing up to Race for life - you may want to change these slides. The 'flipping slide' has a link to a stopwatch - 1 minute was plenty. I got the counters to count for a different tutor group.

This is a little fun resource for Pancake Tuesday on the 9th February. It has a passage with information on Pancake Day, followed by comprehension questions and a gap fill. There is also a word search, a menu for making pancakes with work out the ingredients and a template to design My Pancake Day Menu. Suitable definitely for KS1 (possibly lower KS2) and ESL classes who wish to find out a little more about western culture- and food!
