This resource contains a selection of resources designed to help pupils learn the year 2 common exception words as specified in Appendix 1 of the English National Curriculum. Words are organised into seven word lists, making them easier to teach in manageable sections. The resource includes the following:

• Teaching PPT - Each word list is shown on a separate slide with three activities to help pupils practise spelling and using the words.

• Word List Posters / Flashcards -Each word list appears on its own page in a large font. These can be displayed while pupils are learning a list, or individual words can be cut out and used as flashcards.

• Look Cover Write Check Sheets -Pupils can use these sheets independently to practise spelling using the look, cover, write, check (LCWC) method. There are seven LCWC sheets which contain the spelling lists, plus one editable blank sheet which can be adapted and used to practise specific words.

• Dictation Sentences -Words from each list have been placed in simple sentences for dictation. This helps pupils practise the words in context and strengthens their understanding of basic sentence writing. Once pupils have written the sentences, the PDF can be shown on a screen so pupils can check their work.

• Word Mat -This word mat includes all the Year 2 common exception words in alphabetical order. Pupils could use it as a reference during writing activities. It could also be sent home to provide parents with an overview of the full word list.

• Checklist -This checklist lists the common exception words with tick boxes so teachers can track whether each pupil can read and spell them. The editable blank LCWC sheet could then be used to practise specific words they do not yet know.
