I created this resource because I believe students should know where the Spanish language comes from and how it developed into one of the most spoken languages in the world. Before students begin their Spanish journey, I think it is important that they have a foundation and understand the history behind the language they are learning.

This Spanish Language Origins Activity is perfect for the first or second week of Spanish class. It gives students the opportunity to learn about the origins of Spanish, explore the Spanish-speaking world, and build important background knowledge that will support their learning throughout the school year.

I created this activity to be simple for teachers to implement and easy for students to complete in one class period. It can also be used as a great emergency substitute lesson when you need a ready-to-use activity that still provides students with valuable content.

This resource includes:

*Student worksheet (double-sided)
*Spanish-speaking world map (landscape format)
*Reading passage (double-sided)
*Answer key

Two versions are included to meet the needs of different Spanish levels:

English Version: Recommended for Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 students

Spanish Version: Recommended for Spanish 3 and Spanish 4 students

Printing Instructions & Recommendations:

The student worksheet is formatted for standard printing. The map is designed in landscape format and should be printed separately.

For the reading portion, I recommend printing only enough copies for one class period (for example, thirty copies depending on your class size). The reading pages can be reused with each period. For the worksheet and map, you will need to make copies for each student.
