A complete KS3 History Battle of Hastings scheme of work with 8 fully resourced lessons covering the events leading to the Norman Conquest, the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror’s victory in 1066.

Designed to save valuable planning time whilst keeping students engaged and challenged, this enquiry-based unit develops key historical skills through a wide variety of interactive activities, source investigations and decision-making tasks.

Throughout the unit, students develop their understanding of cause and consequence, significance, chronology, source analysis, historical interpretations and evidence-based judgement. They are encouraged to think like historians, challenge traditional interpretations and justify their conclusions using historical evidence.

Students are introduced to the world before 1066, including Roman Britain, Alfred the Great and Anglo-Saxon England, before investigating the dramatic events surrounding the Norman Conquest. Throughout the enquiry, students examine key historical questions including:

Why was England vulnerable to invasion in 1066?
Who had the strongest claim to the throne?
What were the similarities and differences between the contenders?
Why was the Battle of Stamford Bridge significant?
How did William win the Battle of Hastings?
How important was the feigned retreat and the Anglo-Saxon shield wall?
