Sentence starters prompt display for Key Stage 2 writing. Helps children vary sentence openings using adverbs, similes, conjunctions, clauses, and more.

When teaching Year 5 and 6, I always had this display somewhere in my classroom. Whenever it was time for independent writing and a child got stuck on how to begin a sentence, I would simply point to this display. Off they would go to pick an interesting opening independently! I hope it’s just as useful in your classroom as it was in mine.

8 Sentence Opening Strategies: Fronted adverbials (-ly words), action openers (-ing & -ed verbs), time phrases, location phrases, how-it-happened openers, similes, and subordinate conjunctions/clauses.
