Help your Year 8 students master comparing texts the way the Australian Curriculum asks for it. AC9E8LY05 asks students to use comprehension strategies such as visualising, predicting, connecting, summarising, monitoring, questioning and inferring to interpret and evaluate ideas in texts, and AC9E8LY03 asks them to analyse and evaluate the ways that language features vary according to the purpose and audience of the text, and the ways that sources and quotations are used in a text. This complete unit teaches both halves of Year 8 text comparison in one coherent arc.

This unit is built for Year 8, and is deliberately pitched a step above the Year 7 unit in the same series. For informative texts, students move beyond noting different emphasis to identifying exactly where conflicting accounts disagree on fact versus interpretation. For literature, students move beyond comparing fiction to history, learning how modern fiction transforms myths and traditional stories - describing precisely how the borrowed material is rendered new.

Every lesson follows a consistent arc: a clear learning target, direct instruction with modelled examples, guided and independent practice, and a recap. Three worksheets (six pages) progress students from vocabulary and the fact-versus-interpretation distinction, through matching modern stories to their ancient sources and analysing what is kept and rendered new, to fully independent analysis with self-assessment. The unit closes with a solo exit ticket and a 4-point rubric for teacher assessment.

Includes a full lesson deck, three worksheets, an exit ticket, and a 4-point rubric. All passages are original - not recycled public-domain filler.
