This is GCSE decision making activity is ideal to teach students about prediction and planning of volcanic hazards. It is based on the scenarios which could have taken place before and during the volcanic eruption of Cumbre Vieja volcano in the island of La Palma (Canary islands).

Get students into groups and explain they are a panel of volcano hazard experts who need to decide on the next steps to reduce the risks for the population.
The activity should start with a location of the volcanic area using the Copernicus map La Palma overview.
Give each group a risk assessment and hazard planning exercise sheet .
Present each scenario using the *Cumbre vieja monitoring tasks ppt *to the class and give the groups time to decide which decision they will make. The decision which reduces the volcanic hazard the most will have the highest point; these are to be discussed with the students after the activity and the winning team will be the one with the most points.
At the end of the activity you can show them videos of the actual eruption of Cumbre Vieja in 2021 as well as the map of the elevation change.
Reflection: could the authorities have done more to reduce the risk of the volcanic eruption?
