This is a complete and detailed scheme of work linked to a reading of the playscript ‘Salem’ by John Calcutt, published by Oxford Playscripts. It contains 17 lessons, with linked handouts included within the scheme, and provides approximately 20 hours of direct teaching time. This scheme of work leads students thorough an understanding of key literary techniques while teaching the essentials of essay writing and how to craft a thoughtful and well organised written response to a literature text. The unit concludes with an exam-style essay question. I created this scheme in order to give students in the 11-14 age range grounding and practice with identifying and explaining language techniques, while giving them a head start in terms of essay writing skills ahead of their encounter with more challenging literature texts such as Shakespeare. I am a practicing teacher of English Literature and Language; I also maintain a career as a writer and editor alongside teaching. I hold several postgraduate degrees from the University of Cambridge, including a PGCE in Secondary Education (English.) This scheme of work has been created by me, from scratch, without the use of AI. It would work beautifully embedded within a KS3 school curriculum, or is an excellent teaching resource for 1-2-1 tuition, or for advanced English Language learners wanting to have a first experience of English Literature learning.
