A complete primary CPD pack helping teachers build genuine pupil independence through clear routines, unstuck strategies and carefully faded support.

This ready-to-deliver staff meeting and INSET session helps primary teachers develop pupils who know what to do, what to try and when they genuinely need help. It is practical, evidence-informed and easy to lead.
Independence is not the absence of support. It is pupils increasingly knowing what to do, what to try and when they genuinely need help. This session helps staff build that independence deliberately, without withdrawing the help pupils genuinely need.
This session is designed to sit alongside other CPD in the Lead & Learn Hub range. It stands alone as a complete introduction, and it complements sessions on questioning, feedback and retrieval practice.
Teachers explore six practical principles: making independence explicit, building routines pupils can use without prompting, teaching pupils how to get unstuck, giving the least support that enables success, fading support as competence grows, and teaching pupils to reflect and regulate. Examples span EYFS, KS1 and KS2, so the session suits whole-school staff meetings or phase teams.

The pack contains everything needed to deliver the session with confidence.
• A 90-minute session with a workable 60-minute adaptation
• A 26-slide editable PowerPoint presentation
• A full Presenter Guide and an at-a-glance Presenter Quick Guide
• A staff workbook and a one-page quick reference handout
• Practical activities: What Does This Pupil Actually Need?, Make Independence Visible, Independence Routine Builder, Getting Unstuck Strategy Builder, How Much Help? scenario cards and Scaffold, Fade or Remove?
• An Independence Strategy Bank spanning EYFS to KS2
• An Independent Learning Classroom Audit and a 7-Day Independence Plan
• An evaluation form and a certificate of completion

Suitable for primary teachers, teaching assistants, phase leaders and senior leaders leading whole-school CPD, staff meetings or INSET.
