This fun Colour Tic-Tac-Toe game gives students the opportunity to practice identifying and saying colours while playing a familiar game with a friend.
The game sheet can be inserted into a transparent sheet protector and played using erasable whiteboard markers. This makes the activity reusable and allows students to play the game again and again. Alternatively, the sheet can be laminated if preferred.
Colouring Version
I have also included a colouring version of the game sheet. Students can colour in the circles before playing the game. This provides an additional opportunity to practice recognising and saying the colour names, whilst also making the activity more engaging and personal for students.
Once the colouring is complete, the sheet can be placed in a transparent sheet protector for repeated use with erasable whiteboard markers, or laminated if preferred.
How to Play
Students play in pairs. Each student chooses either X or O.
Players take turns. Before writing their X or O, the student must name the colour shown in the square. Once they name the colour correctly, they can write their letter in the square.
Their opponent then takes their turn.
Just like a standard Tic-Tac-Toe game, the winner is the first player to get three X’s or three O’s in a straight line in any direction — across, down, or diagonally.
Learning Focus
• Practice recognising colours
• Develop colour vocabulary and pronunciation
• Encourage turn-taking and cooperative play
• Build confidence using English independently
• Reinforce the familiar rules of Tic-Tac-Toe
• Develop fine-motor skills through colouring
A simple, reusable activity that students can enjoy with a friend while practicing their English! The colouring version also adds a fun hands-on element before students begin playing.
