This Year 6 maths lesson focuses on solving area and perimeter problems by working backwards to find missing side lengths.

Pupils use the area and perimeter of squares, rectangles and regular polygons to calculate unknown dimensions before applying these skills to more challenging reasoning problems. The lesson also includes compound shape questions where pupils use their understanding of area and perimeter to solve multi-step problems.

Rather than simply calculating area and perimeter, pupils develop a deeper understanding of how these measures are related and apply this knowledge to unfamiliar contexts.
