Science - Year 1 - Materials (6 Lessons + PowerPoint)
Aligned to the Year 1 National Curriculum

This engaging, high-quality 12-page planning (2686 words), 94-slide PowerPoint and 24 resources includes 6 lessons that covers all of the Year 1 National Curriculum objectives for Everyday Materials. This planning is lots of fun and has been designed to develop vocabulary, scientific skills, and build upon subject-specific knowledge.

The WALTs for each lesson are detailed below:

1. Distinguish the material from the object.
2. Identify the properties of an object based on its material.
3. Use a material’s properties to identify what it is made out of.
4. Compare the absorbency of materials.
5. 91¶¶Òõt whether light can pass through materials.
6. Compare the properties of materials for a particular purpose.

This resource includes everything you need to teach the above lessons. You only need to source the physical materials. It includes the planning, an 94-slide PowerPoint and all the resources (24 in total). The resources include all the worksheets, scaffolds, challenges, and header pages for the children’s books if you need to evidence any practical learning.

The planning is clearly laid out and every file is easily labeled by lesson to make everything quick and easy for you. Everything is visually appealing, and every lesson includes 4 levels of differentiation:
• SEN task
• Scaffold for the main task
• Main task
• Challenge

There are a range of activities, including a craft, cutting and sticking, drawing, a simple absorbency test, a simple test to determine whether a material is opaque or transparent, and a fun construction challenge that asks children to make a tent. All the physical resources are likely to be found within a school.
