Othello, a Moorish general in Venetian service, has secretly married a senator’s daughter. Her father accuses him of witchcraft; the Senate dismisses it and sends him to defend Cyprus. His ensign Iago, passed over for promotion, tells the audience exactly what he intends and then does it — and the war that brought them all there is cancelled by a storm before it starts, leaving the characters alone together.
