In this activity, students will examine the development of castle design from the early wooden motte and bailey structures of the Norman period through to the sophisticated stone fortifications of the high Middle Ages. They will also explore the methods that attacking armies used to overcome castle defences and consider how each new attacking technique pushed architects to produce more elaborate and effective designs in response.

It has 10 questions for students to answer, as well as a paragraph response section for them to demonstrate their understanding of the topic.
