Creating Data Entry Forms with Python

The third walkthrough in this practical Python programming series introduces learners to the development of professional desktop data entry applications using Python, Tkinter and Visual Studio Code (VS Code).

Building upon the knowledge and programming skills developed throughout the previous walkthroughs, learners progress from creating simple graphical applications to designing interactive data entry forms that collect, process and display user information using multiple graphical controls and event-driven programming.

This resource of detailed walkthroughs, explanations and practical activities, is an invaluable addition to the BTEC National Computing and IT qualifications, T Level Digital Software Development, Cambridge Technical IT, A Level Computer Science, and many other computing and software development courses where programming, graphical user interface development and software engineering form essential parts of the curriculum.

Like the rest of the series, this walkthrough adopts a structured, step-by-step, project-based approach, introducing new programming concepts gradually whilst continually reinforcing previous learning.
The walkthrough covers a wide range of software development concepts, including:

• Creating multiple Labels and Text Boxes
• Designing professional data entry forms
• Collecting user input using Entry widgets
• Reading information using the get() method
• Creating functions to process user input
• Displaying formatted information using Message Boxes
• Combining text using string concatenation
• Formatting output using newline characters (\n)
• Applying event-driven programming through buttons and user interaction
• Building complete data entry applications through reinforcement activities, mini-projects and extension challenges

Designed with both teachers and students in mind, every section contains detailed explanations, annotated code walkthroughs, reinforcement activities, knowledge checks, extension tasks, real-world examples and computing word banks to support independent learning, classroom delivery and revision.
Unlike many introductory programming resources that focus on isolated examples, this walkthrough enables learners to experience the process of designing and building a complete desktop data entry application. By the end of the walkthrough, learners will have developed software that closely resembles the type of forms used every day within businesses, schools, colleges and organisations around the world.

There is also a complete collection of Python walkthroughs available, allowing teachers and learners to follow a carefully structured learning pathway from absolute beginner through to developing increasingly sophisticated desktop applications using modern programming techniques.
